Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal as a mausoleum for his wife Mumtaz Mahal after she died in 1631

The Mughal emperor Shah Jahan was devastated when his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal died in 1631 while giving birth to their 14th child. He ordered the Taj Mahal to be built in Agra as her tomb. Construction took roughly two decades, from about 1632 to 1653. When Shah Jahan died, he was buried beside her, and it's still one of the most famous monuments to love in the world.
